Week 9 Report
I begin this week's update with some deeply sad news that reached us last week. We are mourning the passing of Phil Kay, a name and face familiar to so many in our community. Phil was a devoted and longstanding member of our league, playing for many years at the Victoria Club in Chesterfield, and more recently at New Whittington SC. His love for snooker was evident; it’s hard to recall a time when his name wasn’t on a scorecard, often alongside his son, James. Their presence together—whether competing or attending league meetings—spoke to the deep bond they shared through the game, and the significant role snooker played in their lives.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to James, his family, and Phil's wider snooker family. He will be missed by all that knew him. Rest in peace, Phil.
This week saw a return to league action, with some notable outcomes across divisions.
In the Premier Division, Brotherhood ‘A’ kept their title hopes alive with a solid 4-1 victory away at Clowne Liberal. The highlight of the match came in the first frame, where Jordi Stevenson set the tone with an impressive 47 break against Scott Anson, giving Brotherhood an early lead.
In Division Two, Hasland Club ‘D’ celebrated their first win of the season with a commanding 5-0 sweep over club rivals Hasland ‘B.’ The team of Steve Gill, Steve Dickens, Paul Bown, Mick Hall, and captain Nick Gaunt all contributed to the clean slate, propelling Hasland ‘D’ three places up the table. The frame of the evening went to Steve Dickens, who posted 2 30+ breaks against Dave Jones.
A surprising result emerged in Division Three, as Lennons SC ‘I,’ the division’s dominant team, hosted mid-table Alfreton ‘F.’ Despite expectations, it was Alfreton who came out on top with an impressive 4-1 win, a result that now sees them climb to 2nd place in the standings.
In competition action, 12-year-old Kai Hopkins continued his impressive run, following up his 3-2 victory over Ben Monk in the Champion of Champions with another close 3-2 win against a Premier Division player. This time, the win came in a Romley pre-lim match, earning Kai a spot in the main draw at the Ding Academy in January. Congratulations, Kai!
In other Romley action, Guy Dennis of The Welcome Club, back in the Chesterfield & District league this season, achieved the week’s highest break with an impressive 71 against Hasland's Steven Moss. Dennis also put up a 44 break during his 3-0 win, highlighting his strong form.
A special mention goes to Gareth Clarke, of Alfreton SC ‘D’ who scored a personal best league break of 42 during his 3-1 victory over Barry Scraton in the Romley.
The Harry Anderson competition saw a high-scoring duel between David Birley and Tom Haney. Haney, showing good form, posted a 38 break, but Lennons' Birley took control with an impressive sequence of breaks—31, 33, 36, 38, and 59—to claim a 3-1 win over his Alfreton opponent.
Steve Donner also displayed top form in his Premier match against Newbold’s Steve Goodwin. Donner recorded breaks of 32, 56, and 63 to secure a strong win for the Alfreton player.
Players in the pairs competition, please be aware that round 3 has now been drawn and the fixtures are on the website. Contact is to be made to your opponents by Sunday 10th November with proposed fixture dates. Matches to be played by Saturday 30th November.
Lastly, players/teams are encouraged to send match reports and photos to me for future weekly updates.
Have a good week, thank you.
