Week 10 Report

Tonne up for Birley

David Birley, Lennons SC ‘H’

David Birley showcased his remarkable scoring prowess once again this week, notching his 9th century in the league during his handicap match against Rob Morley from Newbold on Wednesday evening.

With a brilliant break of 103, Birley is now just two centuries short of leaders Ash Walker and Nigel Bond in the all time list of century makers. Will he manage to close the gap before the season ends?

In addition to his impressive century, Birley dominated the match with a decisive 3-0 victory over Morley, highlighted by additional breaks of 55 and 35.

Building on his singles success, Birley, alongside his playing partner Gav Shirley, faced off against Lewis Longden and Jack Johnson, in the pairs competition. The young Lennons players knew they had a tough match ahead against last seasons champions, but rose to the challenge, quickly securing an early 2-0 lead. However, Birley and Shirley fought back, levelling the score to push the game to a deciding frame. In the end, Longden and Johnson held their composure, taking the final frame with confidence to secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

Well played Lewis & Jack, totally deserved the win.
— David Birley

In the Romley preliminary round, 13-year-old Kai Hopkins clinched a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Ben Monk, earning his spot in the main draw at the Ding Junhui Academy in January. This win further solidifies the young Alfreton player’s record, following his previous triumph over Monk in the Champion of Champions event.

Meanwhile, two-time Grand Masters champion Ian Rose began his pursuit of a third title in the newly renamed John Smith Memorial Trophy with a strong 3-0 victory over last year’s runner-up, Andrew Frisby. Despite several close frames, Rose's performance was highlighted by an impressive break of 46, showing top form as an Alfreton ‘A’ team member.

Premier Division

The race for the Premier Division title stays intense this week, as both of the top two teams secured decisive 4-1 victories. Alfreton ‘A’ maintains a three-point lead over the Welcome Institute with a strong showing in their rescheduled match against Hasland Club ‘A’.

Alfreton’s Ian Rose claimed a key victory over Hasland’s Jason Rimington, which moved him past David Birley and Steve Donner in the individual player standings.

Meanwhile, the Welcome Institute, aiming for their fourth title, strengthened their campaign with a confident 4-1 win over last year’s champions, Lennons ‘H’. New additions Wayne Martin and Joe Reynolds shined, with Martin posting the highest break of the week, an impressive 56 and Reynolds with two 40+ breaks.

Division One

The gap at the top of the table remains unchanged this week with both New Whitt and Newbold running out 3-2 winners in their respective matches.

Likewise in the players standings, the top 3 players remain unchanged too with New Whitt’s, Dan Lock heading the pack.

Division Two

This week saw a highly anticipated top-of-the-table showdown in Division Two, as league leaders Alfreton ‘B’ took on second-place Brotherhood ‘C’. With four of the division's top five players on the roster, the match was expected to be a nail-biter—and it delivered. Roseman and Large continued their strong form, pulling Brotherhood ‘C’ into a 2-1 lead. But Alfreton’s Scott Twells fought back to even the score, pushing the match to a decisive final game. Alfreton captain Nick Oakley, confidently stepping into his reliable fifth position, defeated Williams to preserve the team’s unbeaten record and extend their lead by an additional point.

Meanwhile, Lennons ‘F’ bounced back from last week’s disappointing 4-1 loss with a tight 3-2 victory over Hasland ‘B’. Hasland ‘C’ also claimed a 3-2 win, keeping them within reach of the top two.

Division 3

League leaders Lennons ‘I’ suffered their second consecutive defeat this week, giving other teams a chance to close the gap. Alfreton ‘F’ capitalized with a narrow 3-2 home victory over Doe Lea, bringing them within just one point of the top spot.

New Whitt ‘A’ secured a crucial second win of the season, overcoming Clowne Liberal ‘B’.

In the player standings, Doe Lea’s Robert Wragsdale reclaimed the top position with a win, holding a slim lead over Lennons ‘I’s Jason Wood.

Division Four

Lennons 'G' continue their steady ascent up the table, moving into second place with a decisive 5-0 victory over a struggling Newbold WMC 'B'. Brotherhood remain firmly at the top, holding onto their lead with a close 3-2 win against their club counterparts, Brotherhood 'E'.

Michael Elliott continues to dominate the player standings, looking unstoppable. Can he keep his unbeaten streak alive for the rest of the season?
