Week 3 report
Bond returns to league action.
There was an exciting development in Alfreton this week, marked by a "big announcement" (those in the know will understand!). Twelve-year-old Rocco Amalou made a memorable debut in the Harry Anderson Memorial competition, taking on league veteran Lee Hage of YM Brotherhood. Rocco, who hones his skills at the junior club run by Alan Crownshaw at Alfreton SC, showcased his potential by securing a 3-2 victory over his experienced opponent. He also impressed with a solid break of 32. Keep an eye on this young talent – he’s definitely one to watch for the future.
Also in Alfreton, Kyle Ryde carried the momentum from his impressive weekend in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, where he secured two wins to stay in the championship hunt. Upon his return, he extended his winning streak, helping the 'A' team secure a full 5 points in their match against Clowne 'A'. The victory keeps them firmly at the top of the table.
Nigel Bond made a highly anticipated return to league play, needing no introduction to fans. His frame against Darren Mosley was a standout, both in terms of speed and quality, during Lennons 'H' team's commanding 4-1 victory over Brotherhood 'A'. Mosley started strong, building a solid lead with a well-crafted 38 break, but Bond's class and experience shone through as he responded with breaks of 30 and a 40 clearance, narrowly clinching the frame by just 2 points. Brotherhood 'A' managed to take a consolation frame through Jonathan Hall, who defeated Lennons 'H' captain Kevin Breeze.
In Division 2, former Young Player of the Year Johnnie Bates of Lennons SC 'I' displayed the form that earned him that title, setting the division's high break mark of 40 in his team's 4-1 victory over Hasland Club 'D'. Hasland 'D' are finding the early stages of life in their new division challenging, not least by the unfortunate accident of one their players, Joe Major, who broke his arm this week and will put him out of action for some time, we wish him a speedy recovery.
Meanwhile, Brotherhood C’s rapid rise continues with another dominant performance at home, securing a 4-1 win against Hasland 'B'. This victory puts them 2 points clear at the top of the table, with John Roseman leading the individual standings after three wins from three matches. Brotherhood looks like they’ll be a tough team to beat this season!
It was a pleasure to briefly stop by Newbold CA to catch the opening of the ‘C’ team's match against Lennons ‘G’. The visitors got off to a strong start, with Sean Lennon continuing his perfect record this season by defeating Alan Kerry. However, Newbold responded impressively with wins from John Haywood, Tony Bonsall, and captain Geoff McCleavy, securing a 3-2 victory. Niall Hardwick earned the second point for Lennons.
Next week, the draws for the Romley Prelim, Geoff Hardy Memorial, and the John Smith Memorial competitions will take place. With these events, players will have a busy schedule of individual matches. If you haven't already, please make sure all your current matches are scheduled with confirmed dates.
As the week drew to a close, a bit of magic unfolded at Alfreton SC. In his Harry Anderson match against Brotherhoods, John Roseman, Steve Donner capped off his 3-0 win with an incredible 136 total clearance. This marks Steve’s 4th century and his personal best in the Chesterfield & District League. Impressively, it also ranks as joint 7th highest out of the 116 centuries recorded. Congratulations, Steve!
Until next week, Stuart
