Week 2 report

Allen Thrills Alfreton with Two Impressive Maximums

Alfreton Snooker Club had the privilege of hosting world number 3, Mark Allen, on Saturday evening, where he put on a spectacular exhibition for a packed crowd. And what a performance it was!

Allen faced off against 11 players, nine of whom were from the Chesterfield & District league, a mix of long-standing competitors like Kennedy, Wright, Ian Rose, and Adam Cupit, along with newer faces such as George Wright, Adam West and Nathan Brown. It was particularly special to see juniors like Jack Shawcroft, Kai Hopkins, and Riley Neale taking part, creating unforgettable memories for them.

Mark entered the exhibition in stellar form, having made several centuries, including a 147, just the night before at a club in Shipley, North Yorkshire. With expectations high from the Alfreton audience, Allen wasted no time in delivering, opening with a brilliant 111 against Adam Cupit.

What followed was nothing short of sensational. Clearly comfortable with the table, Mark knocked in a 147 against Ian Rose, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Next up was Adam West, who joked that he couldn't do worse than Ian—though it turned out he could. After a foul on the break, Allen, given ball in hand, quickly sank a long red and, just seven minutes later, completed another 147, leaving West with a 151-0 defeat—indeed, worse than Ian!

The fans were in disbelief at what they were witnessing.

Across the next eight frames, Mark continued his blistering form, making further breaks of 116, 102, 100, 93, 72, 57, 56, 54, and 52. It was a breath-taking display of snooker skill at its finest.

This was the best table I’ve ever played an exhibition on. It was more reactive than I’m used to, it was lovely!
— Mark Allen

Mark wasted no time in messaging his friend, Jack Lisowski, who had made a maximum on the same table just 12 months earlier, to let him know he'd outdone him with two 147s of his own.

Nathan Brown who made the highest bid of £210 in an auction to play Mark, picked up the award for making the highest break against Mark on the night. The money raised from the auction will go to Treetops hospice in memory of John Smith, founder of Alfreton Snooker Club.

A big congratulations to Glen, Sharon, and Adam for organising an unforgettable evening of snooker entertainment. Be sure to keep an eye out for the next event!

League Update

In Division 4, Brotherhood ‘F’ are emerging as the team to beat this season, even at this early stage. They secured a commanding 5-0 victory over their clubmates, Brotherhood ‘E’, extending their winning streak to 10 consecutive frames.

Meanwhile, Lennons ‘J’ also had a strong showing in the same division, earning a valuable win against Brotherhood ‘G’. Paul Mace, Barbara Shillaker, and Dan Barnes all contributed to the team's crucial 3 points.

Over in Division 3, leaders Lennons ‘I’ continued their dominant form with a 4-1 victory over Newbold CA ‘B’. Key wins by Jack Johnson, Ben Walne, and Jason Wood secured their positions in the top three of the individual player standings.

It was also a good week for Alfreton’s Shane Miles in Division 3, as he claimed his first league win of the season against Doe Lea. He followed this up with a 3-1 triumph in the Handicap competition, defeating the in-form Jack Johnson.

Division 2 looks set to be the tightest contest of all, with closely matched teams. Every result this week ended 3-2, including a win for Hasland Club ‘C’ as they began their season.

In Division 1, Ricky Bartram set the early benchmark for the highest break with an impressive 48. Unfortunately, this was the only highlight for Lennons ‘A’, who suffered a 4-1 defeat to New Whittington ‘B’. Dan Lock, Ming Lou, Jamie Bosworth, and Mark Lee all contributed to the win.

Etiquette Reminder
Please remember the correct etiquette when conceding frames. After your turn, avoid offering your hand or disturbing the balls prematurely. Allow your opponent to complete their turn, as every point contributes to their ranking, which could be vital for qualifying for the divisional masters at the end of the season. You may offer your hand only once their turn is complete. Following this etiquette is important for maintaining the spirit of the game. If you need further clarification, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Upcoming Event
Next Sunday, Alfreton SC will host the inaugural Champion of Champions event, where last season's winners and runners-up will compete for the prestigious title. Best of luck to all participants.

Until next week,
Stuart
