Week 11 Update.
Competition Highlights
Martin Finnigan of Lennons 'H' team secured his spot in the main draw of the Romley Caravan Classic with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over rising talent Rocco Amalou. Despite Finnigan’s seasoned reputation, the young Alfreton player made an impressive start, racing to a well-earned 2-0 lead. However, Finnigan's experience and composure came to the fore as he found his rhythm on the table, producing breaks of 70, 38, and 34 to win three consecutive frames and claim the match and a place at the Ding Junhui Academy in January.
Unfortunately, Martin could not back up this win with another in the John Smith Memorial Trophy against Hasland’s, Daryl Turner. The former teammates shared the first 4 frames in a close fought battle, but it was Turner who clinched the decider to progress to the next round.
Meanwhile, Steve Donner continued his dominance in the same competition with an emphatic performance against clubmate Riley Neale. Donner delivered a masterclass in scoring, racking up breaks of 64, 61, 60, and 40 across just three frames, leaving Neale—and the audience—amazed.
"Brutal!" remarked Mike Boden of Lennons, summing up the display.
David Birley of Lennons continues to showcase his exceptional break-building skills, delivering the highest break of the week with a superb 84 during a commanding 3-0 win over Dunc Waring at YM Brotherhood in the Harry Anderson Memorial competition. Birley's performance cements his reputation as one of the league's most consistent scorers.
The highlight of the week, however, came in the third round of the pairs competition, where three-time champions Glen Shawcroft and Kennedy Wright from Alfreton faced off against the in-form duo of John Roseman and Matt Large from YM Brotherhood. Roseman, last season’s Geoff Hardy Memorial runner-up, and Large, the reigning Division Three Masters champion, entered the match with high expectations. Both pairs were evenly matched, splitting the first four frames in a tense contest. Large and Roseman impressed with breaks of 30 and 40, while Shawcroft and Wright responded with contributions of 29, 32, and a decisive 51, which ultimately secured victory for the Alfreton duo and a spot in the Quarter-Finals.
In the Handicap competition, Hasland’s Gav Cann demonstrated the form that earned him the 2023 Division One Masters title with an impressive display against Alfreton ‘A’ player Ben Monk. Cann surged to a quick 2-0 lead with breaks of 48 and 32. Monk, however, fought back valiantly to level the match, forcing a deciding frame. Cann remained composed in the decider, closing out the match comfortably to advance to the next round.
League Action
Premier Division
Alfreton ‘A’ remains the only unbeaten team in the Premier Division this season, following a dominant 4-1 victory over struggling Clowne Lib ‘A’. This result extends their lead to seven points over second-placed Welcome Institute. However, with Alfreton taking a week off next week, all eyes will be on Welcome to see how much of the gap they can close.
Division One
Newbold ‘A’ kept the title race alive with an emphatic 5-0 home victory over Lennons ‘A’. A strong team performance saw Nathan Cooper, Gareth Priestley, Rob Morley, Gary Scott, and Steve Goodwin all secure wins.
Meanwhile, league leaders New Whitt ‘B’ maintained their three-point advantage with a hard-fought 3-2 win against Alfreton ‘D’. The standout moment of the match came from newcomer Lou Ming, who crafted an impressive 43 break to defeat Dave Stoddart.
Division Two: Report by Mike Boden.
Two Division 2 matches ended in convincing wins for Brotherhood ’C’ and Hasland ‘C’, showcasing their strong form. However, Thursday’s clash at Hasland told a different story. Mark Boden marked his return after a two-year break with an impressive victory over Steve Gill, leaving the Hasland player disappointed. Paul and Shaun struggled, resulting in losses that put the Lennons team 2-1 down.
Hasland captain Nick Gaunt, eager for revenge after a prior loss to Lennons’ Mike, started strong against Boden but couldn’t maintain his momentum. Mike delivered a clinical performance, including a 22 clearance, to seal a 3-2 victory for his team. Reflecting on the win, Mike said, “Better luck next time, mate. Great night, great match, and top lads to share the baize with.”
Division Three
The match of the week came from Division Three, where Lennons ‘I’ edged out New Whitt ‘A’ with a 3-2 home victory. Lennons’ Lewis Longden returned from competing in the National County Snooker Championships in Walsall with renewed confidence, knocking in a personal-best 43 break for the season against Rob Dix. Not to be outshone, Lee Buckland also impressed with a composed 40 break against Jack Johnson. The win keeps Lennons ‘I’ just ahead of Alfreton ‘F’ in the standings.
Division Four
YM Brotherhood continues to dominate Division Four, extending their lead at the top with their fifth 5-0 whitewash of the season. Lennons ‘G’ and Newbold CA ‘C,’ sitting in second and third, face a daunting challenge to close the gap on this runaway team.
