Week 27 update

Steve Donner, Alfreton SC ‘A’

Premier Division update

After a dominant 5-0 victory over Hasland ‘A’ in a rearranged fixture, Lennons ‘H’ have reclaimed the top spot in the division and now look like the team to beat as we approach the business end of the season. The standout moment of the night came from David Birley, who delivered an impressive 65 break.

Meanwhile, over at Alfreton, Hasland ‘A’ bounced back with a hard-fought 3-2 win against last week's league leaders, securing their second victory over them.

Despite the narrow defeat, Alfreton had reason to celebrate as Steve Donner continued his remarkable form, notching his third century of the campaign with a superbly crafted 106. This break adds to his earlier efforts of 136 and 109 this season. With just one more century needed to match the league record of four in a single season, can Steve go on to make history?

Division One Update

This week in Division One saw two emphatic 5-0 victories. In the top-of-the-table showdown between Newbold CA ‘A’ and New Whitt ‘B’, Newbold made a bold statement in the title race, extending their lead to six points. The question now is whether Dan Lock and his team can rediscover their early-season form and mount a comeback.

At the other end of the table, the battle to avoid the playoff spot continues between Alfreton ‘G’ and Brotherhood ‘B’. Brotherhood’s grit and determination earned them a crucial 5-0 victory, lifting them out of the danger zone and creating a small cushion towards safety. Martin Conway, fresh from his singles win at Alfreton, played a key role in the victory, notching up a solid 41 break. Likewise, Andrew Frisby compiled a 44 break during his frame.

Meanwhile, despite being late in the season, Lennons ‘C’ have finally found some form. Their 3-2 win over Alfreton ‘D’ marks their first victory in 12 weeks—coincidentally, against the same opponent and by the exact same score line.

Division Two update

Lennons ‘F’ faced a tough challenge this week as they traveled to take on unbeaten Alfreton ‘B’. Hopes were briefly lifted when Shaun Donaldson secured his first win in eight weeks, ending the impressive eight-match winning streak of Rocco Amalou. Shaun came agonisingly close to a 30+ break but fell just short at 29.

Meanwhile, Alfreton’s Rich Amalou made the break list with a composed 31 against young Oliver Boden, who stepped in to support his dad’s team. Additional victories from Scott Twells, Dean Bullock, and captain Nick Oakley sealed yet another win for Alfreton, keeping their unbeaten run intact. However, they face a tricky challenge next week as they take on Brotherhood ‘C’, who are coming off an impressive 4-1 victory over Grassmoor ‘A’.

Division Three update

This division is as tight as it gets, and I’m completely hooked! Incredibly, with the season nearing its end, any of the top six teams still have a genuine shot at the title, with just seven points separating them. For now, Lennons SC ‘I’ hold the top spot after a narrow 3-2 win over Alfreton ‘F’, though both teams sit level on 52 points.

Just as frequently as the teams trade places at the top, the player standings see similar movement. This week, Alfreton’s Paul Sainsbury holds the No.1 spot—but will he still be there next week?

Division Four update

With a commanding 12-point lead, Brotherhood ‘F’ appear to have the title all but secured. However, their closest challengers, Newbold CA ‘C’, managed to close the gap slightly this week after an impressive 5-0 victory over Newbold WMC ‘B’. Still, with just five games remaining, a playoff spot seems the more realistic target for Newbold CA ‘A’. The real battle in this division is shaping up between Newbold, Lennons ‘G’, and Brotherhood ‘E’ for that crucial playoff position.

In the player standings, Brotherhood’s Andrew Shepperd is closing in on long-time leader Michael Elliott, who has held the top spot all season. Can Elliott hang on for just a few more matches?

Competition Results

Only a handful of competition matches took place this week as we move into the next round.

It was a tough week for The Welcome’s Jim Harrison, who suffered a double setback, bowing out of both the Handicap and Harry Anderson competitions at the hands of teammate Dave Bolton and Alfreton’s Adam West. His last shot at individual success now rests on his upcoming Premier competition quarter-final.

Meanwhile, doubles specialists Dave Birley and Gav Shirley demonstrated why they thrive in this format, comfortably overcoming Brotherhood’s Kieron Stevenson and Rob Mullis. Along the way, they also posted the highest break in the Scotch Doubles—a solid 55.
