Week 20 report

Premier latest

With Alfreton SC on a bye week and awaiting a rescheduled match, an opportunity arose for challengers Lennons SC ‘H’ and the Welcome Institute to close the gap on the league leaders. Lennons seemed poised for a dominant victory, racing to a 3-0 lead thanks to impressive wins from Jason Evans, Gav Shirley, and David Birley. However, the Welcome Institute staged a spirited fightback, taking the final two frames. Andrew Diacopoulos ignited the comeback with a composed 35 break against Kev Breeze, while Jim Harrison secured the last frame by edging out the in-form Dave Pagett on the pink ball. The battle at the top of the table remains tightly contested.

Meanwhile, Clowne Liberal’s search for their first win of the season continues, as they suffered another setback against a confident Hasland Club ‘A’. The Hasland players, firmly establishing themselves in the top division, claimed a 4-1 victory. Jason Rimington delivered the standout performance of the evening with an excellent 39 break, leaving Clowne still seeking to turn their fortunes around.

Division One News

New Whittington’s early dominance in this division has gradually waned in recent weeks. Despite securing a 3-2 victory over Lennons ‘A’, their once commanding points lead has now shrunk to just a single point. Their nearest rivals, Newbold CA ‘A’, closed the gap with an emphatic 5-0 whitewash against Brotherhood ‘B’, fueling hopes of reclaiming their spot in the top division after last season’s relegation through the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Alfreton ‘G’ appear comfortably settled in mid-table during their debut season in Division One. A convincing 4-1 triumph over Lennons ‘C’ keeps them well clear of the relegation zone.

The top break of the week in Division One, a modest 35, was shared by Ricky Bartram and Gary Scott.

Division Two Update

This week featured the anticipated top-of-the-table clash between league leaders Alfreton ‘B’ and Brotherhood ‘C’. The visitors arrived at Alfreton aiming to end the hosts’ unbeaten winning streak.

The opening frame was a tense battle between the new 17 & Under champion, Rocco Amalou, and the experienced Lee Hage. In a thrilling finish, it was the younger Amalou who prevailed, clinching the frame on the pink ball. Rocco’s father then extended the lead, putting the league leaders 2-0 ahead.

Brotherhood, however, responded with their top two ranked players, Matt Large and John Roseman. True to their stellar form this season, they leveled the match at 2-2, setting up a decisive final frame. It was Alfreton’s captain, trusted in his familiar 5th position, who sealed the victory against Mark Hodgkinson, ensuring the team’s unbeaten streak continued.

In Division Two, Hasland ‘B’ boosted their survival hopes with an impressive 4-1 win over Lennons ‘F’. Unfortunately, their club rivals, Hasland ‘D,’ suffered a setback, losing 4-1 to fellow club team Hasland ‘C’.

Division Three Report

The top two teams in Division Three maintained their strong form this week, both securing important victories. Alfreton ‘F’ edged past Doe Lea with a narrow 3-2 win, while Lennons ‘I’ delivered a more commanding 4-1 triumph over a struggling Newbold CA ‘B’. With these results, Lennons have extended their lead over Alfreton by an additional point.

Clowne ‘B’ took another step toward safety with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over New Whittington ‘A’, further boosting their survival hopes.

Division Four update

Lennons ‘J’ secured their third win of the season in emphatic fashion, defeating Brotherhood ‘G’ 4-1. A special highlight of the match was 10-year-old Oliver Boden’s first league victory, as he overcame Dean Reynolds in the opening frame—congratulations, Oliver! Additional wins from Paul Mace, Dan Barnes, and Dan Hickman sealed the comprehensive victory for Lennons.

Meanwhile, at Clay Cross, Brotherhood ‘F’ continued their dominance in the division with a commanding 4-1 victory over Brotherhood ‘E’. Although Lennons ‘G’ earned a 3-2 win in their match, the league leaders appear unstoppable, holding a formidable 10-point advantage at the top of the table.

Finally

As the season approaches its crucial stages, every point matters for players vying for a top-eight spot in the standings—and with it, a place in the end-of-season Divisional Masters competition. That extra black ball at the end of a frame could be the deciding factor in your final ranking.

If you’re conceding a frame, please remember to extend your hand on your turn and give your opponent the opportunity to take their next shot if they wish. It could make all the difference to their standing. Every point counts!

Competition Results

With Grassmoor WMC ‘A’ on a break this week due to a BYE, Deano Hancock made the most of his downtime by catching up on his un-played competition matches. Braving cold and wet conditions on his trusty motorbike, Deano traveled across the area to compete in his Handicap, Geoff Hardy, and Scotch Doubles matches—and emerged victorious in all three. Deano thought he deserved a shoutout, and we couldn’t agree more—well done, Deano! We hope your strong form continues into the Romley competition next week.

The match of the week, however, came in the John Smith Memorial Trophy, where Kieron Stevenson and Matt Large—both from YM Brotherhood but separated by two divisions and 85 places in the player rankings—delivered a thrilling encounter. Large struck first, taking the opening frame to set the tone, but Premier player, Stevenson responded brilliantly with breaks of 38 and 48 in the second, levelling the match and signalling he wasn’t going down easily. Large, rising to the challenge, fired back with a 44 break to reclaim the lead, only for Stevenson to hit a superb 48 break to force a decider. In a match where it was a shame for there to be a loser, Large held his nerve in the deciding frame, securing a 90-48 victory to book his spot in the Quarter finals. Well done, Matt!

Also In the John Smith Memorial, Jonathan Hall and Alan Crownshaw secured impressive victories. Hall, who leads the Premier Division player standings, defeated Hasland’s Daryl Turner 3-1, showcasing breaks of 32, 34, and 57—the highest break of the week. Meanwhile, Crownshaw claimed a hard-fought win over Gary Scott, aided by breaks of 31 and 42.

In the Handicap competition, Dave Bolton’s consistent break-building proved decisive against Lennon’s Dave Pagett. Both players achieved high breaks of 45 in what turned out to be an excellent encounter.

A reminder to all players: all current competitions must be completed by the end of January.
