Week 15 Update

Young Juniors Gather in Leicester for EPSB U14's Tournament

Young players from Alfreton’s Junior Club

Alfreton SC Shines at EPSB Under-14 Snooker Event

Eight young talents from Alfreton Snooker Club, proudly sporting their matching team tops, made the hour-long journey down the M1 to participate in the opening round of the EPSB Under-14 tournament. Hosted at Breakers Snooker Club in Leicester, the event brought together budding stars aged 8 to 13, eager to showcase the skills honed under the guidance of coaches Alan Crownshaw and Steve Donner.

The day was filled with competitive spirit and enthusiastic support from families and fans, including club owners Glen and Sharon.

After a series of tightly contested group-stage matches, three Alfreton players who also compete in the Chesterfield League advanced to the semi-finals. Riley Neale faced Leicester’s rising star Faiz Majid in one match. Faiz’s sharp and rapid potting proved too much for Riley, earning the Leicester player a spot in the final. The other semi-final saw Kai Hopkins take on Rocco Amalou in a hard-fought battle. Despite Kai’s strong effort, Rocco emerged victorious to set up an exciting final against Faiz.

In the final, Rocco seized early opportunities with precision and complemented his attacking play with impressive safety shots, keeping Faiz at bay. With a composed and confident performance, Rocco secured the top spot in this opening event and now heads into the next round in excellent form.

Congratulations to all the players for their efforts and especially to Rocco for a well-deserved victory!

Premier Division Report

With the Alfreton ‘A’ v Brotherhood ‘A’ match postponed, only one Premier Division fixture took place this week. The Welcome Institute wrapped up the first half of the season in style, securing maximum points against Clowne ‘A’ and handing them their first whitewash of the season. The highlight of the evening came in the fifth frame, where Adam Clift continued his fine form from the previous match, defeating Tom Newsome 115-2 with impressive breaks of 34 and 39. This victory places the Welcome in a three-way tie at the top of the table heading into the Christmas break.

Division One Review

Newbold CA ‘A’ secured their fourth 4-1 victory of the season, repeating the score line from their earlier encounter with Alfreton ‘G’. Nathan Cooper delivered the standout performance of the night, crafting an impressive break of 50 to defeat Alex Radford. Additional wins from Gary Scott, Mark Nunn, and Rob Morley gave the home side a commanding 4-0 lead, with Stu Smith salvaging a consolation frame for Alfreton by defeating Steve Goodwin in the final frame. Newbold remains within striking distance of the division leaders, New Whitt ‘B’.

In the Lennons Derby, the ‘A’ team continued their dominance over the struggling ‘C’ team with another 4-1 victory, mirroring the result from earlier in the season.

Alfreton ‘D’ edged out Brotherhood ‘B’ with a 3-2 win. While this result doesn’t propel them into contention for the top two spots, it ensures they go into the Christmas break with bragging rights over their club rivals, the ‘G’ team, holding a narrow one-point advantage.

Division Two Action

The top two teams in the division both secured 4-1 victories this week, creating a small gap at the summit. Alfreton ‘B’ remain unbeaten this season and, with a rearranged match scheduled for next week, they are optimistic about continuing their impressive streak into the second half of the campaign. Meanwhile, Hasland Club ‘C’ saw their title ambitions take a hit after a decisive 4-1 loss to league leaders Brotherhood ‘C’.

Grassmoor’s struggles continued as their trip to Lennons ‘F’ offered no reprieve. Mike Boden’s team handed the league’s bottom-placed side another defeat, leaving Grassmoor with just one win so far this season. Can they turn their fortunes around after the Christmas break?

Division Three Update

Alfreton ‘F’s impressive 10-match winning streak came to an end this week as visitors New Whitt ‘A’ handed them their second loss of the season. Despite the setback, Alfreton still hold the top spot going into Christmas. Close on their heels are Lennons ‘I’, who trail by just one point after a comfortable 4-1 victory over Brotherhood ‘D’. Lewis Longden showcased his scoring prowess with a 36 break against Brotherhood captain Lee Shaw, who responded with a steady 30 break of his own.

It was a tough week for Newbold CA ‘B’, who suffered back-to-back defeats, cementing their place at the bottom of the table.

Meanwhile, Clowne ‘B’ remain cautiously hopeful for a promotion spot. Their 3-2 win this week keeps them within six points of a playoff position, leaving room for optimism as the season progresses.

Division Four Report

Division Four Highlights: Lennons 'G' Dominate Derby with Whitewash Victory

The standout match of the week was the Division Four derby between Lennons ‘G’ and Lennons ‘J’. After suffering a 5-0 defeat in their previous encounter, Barbara Shillakers ‘J’ team faced an uphill battle. Unfortunately for them, it was déjà vu as Sean Lennon’s ‘G’ side delivered an even more decisive whitewash, featuring stellar performances across the board.

Three of the ‘G’ team players posted breaks over 30, underscoring their dominance. Josh Moybray, a new addition to the team, stole the spotlight with a stunning 46 break, setting the highest break in Division Four this season. Another newcomer, Mason Wilson, made an immediate impact with a flawless debut, contributing a solid 32 break. Niall Hardwick, Daz Hemingway, and Damien Woodward—who chipped in with a 35 break—completed the whitewash. The victory propels Lennons ‘G’ into a playoff position in this fiercely competitive division.

Despite the tough loss, there were bright moments for Lennons ‘J’. Ten-year-old Oliver Boden continues to improve and impress, pushing his frame to the pink ball before narrowly losing. His progress in league snooker is evident, and his enjoyment of the game shines through. Keep going, Oli!

Brotherhood 'F' Extend Lead with Hard-Fought Win

In another derby, league leaders Brotherhood ‘F’ strengthened their position at the top with a narrow 3-2 win over club rivals Brotherhood ‘G’. Michael Elliott and Keith Chaplin both maintained their exceptional win rates, keeping their spots at the summit of the player standings.

Meanwhile, Brotherhood ‘E’ secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Newbold CA ‘C’, keeping themselves just two points behind the playoff positions. Their strong performance highlights the tightly contested nature of the division, where every point matters.

Competition Results

Busy Week for Duncan Waring Across League and Competitions

It was a packed schedule for Duncan Waring as he juggled league and competition commitments this week. After a solid win in his league match, his results in the competitions were a mix of highs and lows.

In the Geoff Hardy competition, Duncan was in fine form as he overcame former champion John Barlow in a closely contested 3-2 victory. Along the way, he registered impressive breaks of 43 and 46, matching the current high break record set by Mark Hodgkinson.

However, the John Smith Memorial saw a narrow defeat for Duncan against Guy Dennis. The Welcome player delivered a stellar performance, making breaks of 48 and 52 to edge out a 3-2 win.

In the Premier competition, it was a tougher outing for Waring as he faced Gary Scott from Newbold. Scott delivered a decisive 3-0 victory, capped by an impressive 59 break.

Meanwhile, Jim Harrison of Welcome continues to command attention for his high-scoring prowess. During his 3-1 victory over Brotherhoods’ Mark Hodgkinson in the Handicap, Harrison compiled breaks of 33, 54, and a remarkable 70, securing the highest break of the week yet again. Can he maintain this streak next week?

Reminder:
Don’t forget the deadlines for this month! Matches for the Pairs, Team of Three, and Romley Preliminaries must be completed by the end of December.
