Smith hangs his cue up

75 and out!

Edwin Smith, 91, Grassmoor WMC

A Remarkable Journey Comes to a Close

The time has finally come for Edwin to hang up his snooker cue after an extraordinary run that has left a lasting legacy in the Chesterfield & District Snooker League.

Last season, Edwin took to the table one final time to extend his unparalleled streak—an astonishing 75 consecutive seasons representing Grassmoor WMC. To honour this incredible achievement, the league proudly presented him with a commemorative certificate, which he was truly delighted to receive.

Now 91, Edwin began his league career at just 14 years old. Over the decades, he has built an enviable record: a Premier title in 1972, two Grand Masters titles, four Pairs victories, and countless team honours. In 2006, he was fittingly recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Beyond snooker, Edwin also had a distinguished cricketing career with Derbyshire, playing in 503 matches, scoring 7,000 runs and taking an impressive 1,217 wickets as a right-handed all-rounder.

But, alas, time catches up with us all. At 91, and with mobility now a challenge, Edwin has made the difficult decision to retire from the game he loved so much. Though his legendary streak has come to an end, his record stands as a towering testament to passion, commitment, and resilience—one that may never be matched.

On behalf of the Chesterfield & District Snooker League, we extend our deepest thanks to Edwin for his decades of dedication.

Thank you, Edwin.
