David Birley and Gavin Shirley, fresh from their triumph in the Pairs competition, returned to the stage for another doubles final. This time, they faced off in the Scotch Doubles against the formidable duo of Jason Rimington and Gavin Cann from the Hasland Club. The Hasland pair had hopes of thwarting the Lennons’ bid for a second title together.
The match began with nerves on both sides, but it was the Lennons pair who seized the initiative. They crafted a respectable 41-break to secure the opening frame. As the contest unfolded, chances arose for both teams. However, a few uncharacteristic misses and unfortunate in-offs by the Hasland pair allowed Birley and Shirley to establish a 2-0 lead in this best-of-five encounter.
Could Rimington and Cann muster the same fighting spirit they had displayed in earlier rounds? Alas, it appeared not. The third and decisive frame echoed the previous ones, and the Lennon’s lads comfortably crossed the finish line, clinching the double victory.
