Match Report
The tournament at the Ding Junhui Academy in Sheffield began with 64 players at the end of January. It was a challenging field of players, but the final match featured two players who were in top form: Jonathan Hall and David Birley.
The final match took place at Alfreton Snooker Club, where Mark Selby had thrilled the audience the night before. It was a tough act to follow, but the players did not let anyone down!
In the opening frame, David continued his impressive form from the semi-final against Ryan Bailey, scoring a 35-point break to dominate the frame and go 1-0 up. Jonathan fought back with some consistent scoring in the next frame, making it 1-1 in this best of 7 clash.
David was in top form today, scoring 40, 41 and 53 points in the next two frames. He gained a 3-1 lead and was one step closer to winning the title. But Jonathan still had a chance to win, and he showed it by scoring 35 points in a clean break and playing some smart defensive shots. He won the fifth frame and narrowed the gap to just one point behind his rival..
David clinched the title with a superb performance, as all great players do, by scoring a brilliant century break of 101. This not only secured him the title, but also snatched the high break prize from his previous opponent, Ryan Bailey, who had held onto the prize until the final frame of the competition. Congratulations to Dave for scoring his 7th century break in the Chesterfield & District Snooker League!
I want to express my gratitude to all the players who joined and contributed to the success of the competition. I also appreciate the venues that accommodated us and the sponsors whose generosity enabled this to be one of our biggest tournaments.
We have some exciting news to share with you, thanks to our new partner, SightRight UK. There will be a bonus match between the winners of the Romley Plate and the Main competitions, respectively. We will publish the details soon...
I would like to congratulate both players for making it to the final and especially Dave for his victory. They both have a chance to win more trophies as the season draws to a close.
